We eat quite a bit of fish in our house and I hear people talk a lot about how they can’t get fresh fish and frozen fish doesn’t taste good and I’m hear to debunk that myth!
I really don’t know where I learned this method, but I use it for all the frozen fish that I prepare. I’ve never seen it on the list of thawing options on packages, but I guarantee this works better than anything on the label!
First of all, we want to make sure that the fish is in individual packets. Then follow this method and you’ll have perfectly thawed and ready to cook healthy, delicious, fish.
You’ll need:
- However many pieces of fish you’re intending to cook
- a large, clean, glass bowl (plastic would be ok, too – but metal is too reactive)
- running water
- paper towels
- Put the bowl in the sink and place the individually wrapped fish pieces in the bowl
- Run cold water over the fish (NOT HOT! We don’t want to start the cooking process)
- Let sit for a few minutes
- When the water starts to feel icey, dump the bowl and refill with cold water from the tap
- Repeat until the fish is thawed, this will vary depending upon the thickness
- Remove fish from packets and place on a paper towel lined plate
- Pat dry with more paper towels
- Season your fish an cook as you wish
I promise this will give you perfectly thawed fish that I bet you can’t tell was ever frozen.
